STEEPLECHASE COME BACK...COME BACK (1983) |
| |
|
|
Intended to act as sympathetic magic in bringing back the legendary Steeplechase Park, this mural was conceived & designed by Richard Eagan and Philomena Marano, the original co-founders of The Coney Island Hysterical Society. And special thanks to the late JB Connors for helping us paint (especially the figures). It graced the side of the building which housed the 'Dragon's Cave' dark ride, (later known as the SPOOKHOUSE), on the Bowery & W. 15th St in Coney Island, until demolition of the building in 1998.
The mural appears in Ric Burn's 1991 PBS documentary, CONEY ISLAND and is mentioned in the text of Richard Snow's CONEY ISLAND, A Postcard Journey to the City of Fire, 1984, Brightwaters Press, New York.

Philomena Marano, An artist who has long established her loyalty to Brooklyn through her work, earned first prize yesterday in the Spirit of Brooklyn poster contest.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz created the contest this year so that a Brooklyn artist would design a poster to advertise the borough's treasures and entertainment—for locals and tourists alike.
Markowitz will create a tourism center in Borough Hall and sell the posters for donations to benefit Brooklyn's underprivileged children.
